Spring Walks With Your Oodle: A Quick Coat and Paw Check

Spring means more time outdoors with your Oodle. It can also mean more grass, pollen and bits of plant material caught in a curly or wavy coat. A short check after each walk helps you spot problems early without turning every outing into a full grooming session.

Start with the paws

Once your dog is settled, gently look between the toes and around the paw pads. Check for loose grass, burrs or other debris. If something is embedded in the skin, the paw is swollen, or your dog keeps licking or limping, contact your vet rather than digging at it yourself. Grass seeds can work into the skin and may need veterinary care.

Check the places that collect debris

Run your fingers lightly over the legs, belly, armpits and around the collar or harness. Look behind the ears, too. These areas can collect plant material and are also common spots for tangles. Part the coat so you can see near the skin, not just the fluffy surface.

Remove loose debris gently by hand. If you find a knot, don't tug or cut close to the skin. Work slowly with a suitable brush and comb if your dog is comfortable, or ask your groomer to help with a tight mat.

Notice changes in your dog's behaviour

Repeated paw licking, scratching, head shaking, redness or a sore-looking patch deserves attention. Pollen and other environmental factors can bother some dogs, but those signs can have several causes. Speak to your vet if they persist or your dog seems uncomfortable.

Make the check easy to repeat

Keep a towel and your usual grooming tools near the door. After a walk, check paws first, then scan the legs, belly, ears and harness area. Reward calm cooperation and keep the session short. If the coat is wet or muddy, clean and dry it gently rather than rubbing hard with a towel, which can encourage tangles.

If your Oodle finds handling or brushing stressful, you could try our Natural Calming Spray as part of a calm grooming routine. It’s a topical mist designed for coat comfort and a gentle aroma during handling. Follow the product directions, and don't use a spray to mask persistent itching or irritation; ask your vet about those symptoms.
